Regular Reading with Others
The best way to grow in your knowledge of the content of the bible is to read it conjunction with other people.
One way that we encourage this at Encounter is to follow the Moravian Daily readings. Each Monday to Saturday there are readings from a Psalm, the Old Testament and the New Testament. On Sundays there are lectionary readings from a Psalm, the Old Testament, the New Testament letters and a Gospel. Over a period of two years you can read through the whole bible and it only takes 10-15 minutes per day.
To enable the reading in conjunction with other people, Encounter has a facebook group where we share questions about, insights from, and applications of, the day’s readings.
Our companion website encounterbc.org provides:
-
the daily readings,
-
links to an online bible to enable you to read them on your computer or mobile device (you can even save the website to your device’s home page so it appears as an app)
-
a growing list of short articles that provides additional information about the books of the bible.
An effective framework for reading the bible is:
Head - what does the passage say?
Heart - what does the passage say to me?
Hand - what will I do and with whom will I share as a result of the reading?
Covenant and Kingdom - the two major themes of the bible
Covenant and Kingdom are the two major themes of the bible. As you read any passage, it can be helpful to think about whether it is talking about Covenant, Kingdom, or both.
Here are some resources that help unpack these two themes:
